What a week it has been for #iubase #ProBallHoosiers! From a Big League promotion, to a combined no-hitter, to a Major League record-breaking game for a Hoosier, and much more.
Last night, Catcher Josh Phegley had a career game for the Athletics, as he went 4-for-5 with a HR (4), two doubles, and 8 RBIs. The 8 RBIs were the most a former Hoosier has ever collected in a game. The great Ted Kluszewski held the record for 67 years as he had 7 RBIs for the Cincinnati Reds on 4/20/52. It’s also the most RBIs any catcher for the A’s has ever knocked in, in the 118 years of the franchise.
Also last night, OF/1B Alex Dickerson got promoted from AAA El Paso to the San Diego Padres. After playing for the Padres during the 2015-16 seasons, injuries kept Dickerson out of baseball for two seasons. In 24 games for El Paso, Dickerson hit .360 with 5 HRs, 5 doubles, and 19 RBIs.
On April 25th, LHP Kyle Hart pitched 6.2 inning of no-hit ball, while striking out 6 and walking only one for AA Portland (Red Sox). The SeaDogs bullpen preserved the no-hitter. The last time an IU alumnus was involved in a combined no hitter was August 5, 2018 when Christian Morris finished off the game pitching 1 inning for the Advanced-A Tampa Tarpons (Yankees).
On April 30, OF Kyle Schwarber hit his 4th HR of the year for the Cubs. Per baseball-reference.com, it was the most impactful play of the day as it increased the Cubs’ win probability 51%, to 72%, as the Cubs went on to win 6-5.
After a shaky first outing, RHP Jonathan Stiever has settled in for A Kannapolis (White Sox). In that time, he has gone 2-1 with a 2.57 ERA and a 29:8 K:BB ratio for the Intimidators.
LHP Caleb Baragar was promoted for one game to AAA Sacramento (Giants). In the start for the River Cats, Baragar held his own striking out 6 and walking only 2 in 4.1 innings of work.
OF Craig Dedelow is batting .325 with 14 hits over his last 10 games for Advanced-A Winston-Salem (White Sox).
