Two Indiana University Baseball Alumni Start in the same MLB lineup

Josh Phegley and Kyle Schwarber started together today at Wrigley Field. 

The two former IU All AmerIcan’s played a combined 346 games in the Cream and Crimson. Today they both started for the Chicago Cubs. 

Today’s Pirates vs Cubs game was also the 62 time that 2 Indiana University Baseball alumni have been in the same MLB team’s starting lineup. It was the first time two Hoosier Baseball Alumni started for the same MLB team since the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1999.

⚾️ Ted Kluszewski & Sammy Esposito, ’59-60 White Sox- 13 times

⚾️ Kermit Wahl & Mike Modak, ’45 Reds- twice

⚾️ Chris Peters & John Wehner, ’99 Pirates- twice

⚾️ Josh Phegley & Kyle Schwarber, ’20 Cubs- once

The first time it happened was September 5, 1945 when the Cincinnati Reds beat the Philadelphia Phillies 1-0 behind a complete game shutout by Hoosier Mike Modak. Hoosier Kermit Wahl helped by turning 2 double plays at 2nd.

The game took 1 hour and 38 minutes.
