By Carl James @jovian34 February 17, 2024

Bottom 9th: Hoosiers 7 – no. 18 Coastal 2 (FINAL)

Bothwell back out to close this with a five run lead. He is fired up as he strikes out the 9-hole hitter. A flyout takes Coastal to their last out. Bothwell walks Caden Bodine on a 3-2 pitch. Derek Bender hits a single off the right field wall that puts runners on the corners. Dustin Glant comes out to talk with Bothwell. Bender advances via defensive indeferense and a fly ball seals the road ranked win.

Top 9th: Hoosiers 7 – no. 18 Coastal 2

Devin Taylor leads off the inning with a single. Indiana would like some insurance here. Sam Murrison pinch runs for Taylor and Tibbitts moves Murrison into scoring position with a single. A wild pitch moves both runners into scoring position for Tyler Cerny who rips a single scoring them both. Stadler rips a ball that is well played for a fielder’s choice. A.J. Shepard rips a bomb to right center to extend the lead to 5.

Bottom 8th: Hoosiers 3 – no. 18 Coastal 2

Bothwell is back out with the one-run lead. He’s thrown 48 pitches so far. No activity yet in the Hoosier bullpen. Tyler Cerny makes a good throw on a groundout for the first out of the inning. Someone is stretching in the Hoosier bullpen. Bothwell strikes out Blake Books for out number two. A line out to Taylor in left ends the inning.

Top 8th: Hoosiers 3 – no. 18 Coastal 2

Morgan Colopy goes down on strikes. Brandon Burckel goes yard to left field to give the Hoosiers the lead. Mathison flies out and Pyne strikes out.

Bottom 7th: Hoosiers 2 – no. 18 Coastal 2

A single, stolen base, and groundout have a runner on third with two outs. Mathison collects a flyout in center to end the inning with no damage.

Top 7th: Hoosiers 2 – no. 18 Coastal 2

Coastal gives the ball to righty Cameron Flukey and Devin Taylor looks at 96 MPH fastball for strike three. Brock Tibbitts is robbed of a double with a diving catch by third baseman Sam Antonacci for out number two. Tyler Cerny walks on four pitches. Stadler is plunked to get Cerny into scoring position for A.J. Shepard. Shepard goes down swinging on a 96 MPH fastball.

Bottom 6th: Hoosiers 2 – no. 18 Coastal 2

Ty Bothwell is throwing strikes. A ground ball to Cerny hops to Tibbitts who can’t quite collect it. Stadler backed it up and made a good throw to second which was ruled safe. Play is under review. After the review the play stands. The tag didn’t quite get down from my vantage point in real time. Runner in scoring position with no outs. After 2 balls, Bothwell induces a groundout to first, but the runner is 90 feet away with only one out. An RBI Texas league double gets Coastal within one with tying run in scoring position. Bothwell barely beats the runner to the bag on ground ball to Tibbitts for the second out of the inning advancing the runner to third. Bothwell walks the next batter on five pitches prompting a mound visit by pitching coach Dustin Glant. The Hoosier bullpen is also getting active. An RBI single ties the game up. Bothwell then loads the bases with a hit-by-pitch. Ty strands all three with a strikeout.

Top 6th: Hoosiers 2 – no. 18 Coastal 0

Stadler sees a lot pitches in his at bats, but grounds a 3-2 pitch to the second baseman. Colopy smacks a two-out single, his first hit of the season. Burckel gets plunked on a 1-2 pitch to bring Carter Mathison to the plate with two on. Mathison walks to load the bases for Josh Pyne, who grounds out to end the inning.

Bottom 5th: Hoosiers 2 – no. 18 Coastal 0

Ty Bothwell is the new Hoosier pitcher. Bothwell gets a quick flyout. ⭐Bothwell leaps to collect the comebacker for out number 2. A flyout ends the 1-2-3 inning for the graduate student southpaw.

Top 5th: Hoosiers 2 – no. 18 Coastal 0

Morgan Colopy works a 6-pitch walk to lead off the inning with a baserunner. Brandon Burckel fails to deaden the sacrifice bunt attempt and replaces Colopy at first. It works out as an errant pick-off throw gets Burckel into scoring position. Mathison gets plunked on a full count. Pyne walks to load the bases for reigning B1G Freshman of the Year Devin Taylor. Coastal goes to the bullpen. Taylor rips an RBI single to left field to get Indiana on the board. Tibbitts extends the lead with a sacrifice fly. A wild pitch puts two in scoring position for Tyler Cerny who grounds out to second base.

Bottom 4th: Hoosiers 0 – no. 18 Coastal 0

Foley picks up a pair of quick flyouts. Ty Bothwell is now throwing in the Hoosier bullpen. A walk and a wild pitch put a runner into scoring position before Mathison tracks down a drive to the gap for third out. After four innings Foley has held a potent Coastal offense to no runs and two hits. He is at 77 pitches so he’s getting more efficient.

Top 4th: Hoosiers 0 – no. 18 Coastal 0

Brock Tibbitts rips a two-out single up the middle. Tyler Cerny follows that up with an opposite field single. A wild pitch puts both of them into scoring position. Stadler gets ahead in the count 3-1, drawing a walk to load the bases for A.J. Shepard. Meckley escapes the jam with groundout and now has thrown 61 pitches.

Bottom 3rd: Hoosiers 0 – no. 18 Coastal 0

Foley gets a much needed 1-2-3 inning. His last pitch is a swinging strikeout at 97MPH. He’s at 63 pitches, no action in the Indiana bullpen, so expect he still has gas left.

Top 3rd: Hoosiers 0 – no. 18 Coastal 0

Coastal’s starter Alexander Meckley strikes out Morgan Colopy on a full count fould tip and gets Brandon Burckel to strike out. Meckley strikes out Mathison with a wicked breaking ball. Meckley is locating and mixing up his pitches well.

Bottom 2nd: Hoosiers 0 – no. 18 Coastal 0

Connor Foley has thrown 28 pitches heading into the second frame. I would assume he’s limited to roughly 60 pitches in this early outing. Can he be more efficient this inning? Foley gets behind 3-1 to the first batter but freezes him on a change-up for a looking strikeout. The next batter doubles. Foley keeps getting behind in counts, but avoids walking anyone. With two outs he was called for a balk, which brought coach Mercer out to the field for a clarification which seemed to be satisfactory. Foley ended up striking out three in the inning to keep the Chanticleers off the scoreboard. Foley has thrown 50 through two innings. He may only get one more inning. No action as of yet in the Hoosier bullpen.

Top 2nd: Hoosiers 0 – no. 18 Coastal 0

Jake Stadler worked a long full count but went down on strikes. 1-2-3 inning.

Bottom 1st: Hoosiers 0 – no. 18 Coastal 0

Connor Foley got into a two-out bases loaded jam, but escaped without any damage. Batters got on via a hit, a walk, and catcher’s interference. Foley was sitting 93-94 on his fastaball and touched 97 on the last out which was a pop up caught by Josh Pyne at third base.

Top 1st: Hoosiers 0 – no. 18 Coastal 0

Josh Pyne rips a one-out double to left field to start the hitting for the Hoosiers, but he is stranded. Two strikeouts and a flyout strands Pyne.
