Hoosiers try to hold off elimination in first game against Michigan with Smith as Wolverine coach

Bottom 8th: Indiana 6, Michigan 13

Voit is just killing the Hoosiers today. Lead off double. Levy gets a quick ground out. A single puts runners on the corners. A walk loads the bases. Levy makes a force play at home for the second out. Indiana’s outfield plays in and gets burned on a deep fly ball that becomes a bases clearing double. That ends Levy’s day. Cooper Hellman is the new pitcher and gets a ground out.

Top 8th: Indiana 6, Michigan 10

Cerny fouled out. Serruto draws a one-out walk to bring up the top of the Hoosier order. Glasser just misses a homer foul to right. Serruto is stranded.

Bottom 7th: Indiana 6, Michigan 10

Gabe Levy is the new Hoosier pitcher. A pop up to no man’s land in short left is reeled in by a great ⭐play from Tyler Cerny. The second pitch of the inning is a ground out. A foul pop up completes a 5-pitch 1-2-3 inning for Levy.

Top 7th: Indiana 6, Michigan 10

WHALEN 2-run 💣. Whalen walks, Mathison walks, and Pyne comes through with a 2-out RBI double. Tracy Smith has seen enough and goes to his closer. The move works as Jessee strikes out on a 3-2 pitch above the strike zone.

Bottom 6th: Indiana 3, Michigan 10

Ben “Bigs” Seiler is the new Hoosier pitcher. He gets into a pair of 3-ball counts but gets a looking strikeout and a pop-up. Seiler hits Joey Velazquez in the back. Voit continues to punish Indiana, this time with a single to left field as the designated hitter. Van Remortel hits an RBI single to extend the Wolverine lead. Stanton hits an RBI single as well. An infield single and a hit-by-pitch brings in another run. The wheels have come off for Indiana. Jessee collects a fly ball to end the inning. Gabe Levy is tossing in the Hoosier bullpen.

Top 6th: Indiana 3, Michigan 7

Tibbitts walks, Mathison singles, and Pyne grounds into an RBI fielder’s choice scoring Tibbitts. Jessee singles getting Pyne to third. At 93 pitches, the freshman Voit is done for the day having mostly confounded Hoosier hitters in his first career start. Jessee steals second and when the throw to second is dropped, Pyne scores from third.

Bottom 5th: Indiana 1, Michigan 7

Risedorph allows another lead-off runner via a Voit single. Risedorph then plunks a batter with an 0-2 pitch. A perfectly laid down bunt prompts an aggressive throw by Pyne that ends yup in right field for another Wolverine run and Pyne’s second throwing error of the day. Risedorph gets down 3-0 as Ben Seiler starts warming in the Hoosier bullpen. Risedorph come back and strikes that batter out. He follows that up with an infield pop-up and fly-out to right to strand two runners.

Top 5th: Indiana 1, Michigan 6

Pyne strikes out on a pitch up and in out of the strike zone. Jessee gets on with a single and Cerny is plunked prompting Wolverine bullpen action and a pitching coach visit. Serruto pops up in the infield for out number two. Glasser is heating up with an RBI single.

Both 4th: Indiana 0, Michigan 6

Taylor is playing shallow and Dylan Stanton rips a ball over Taylor’s head that he can’t quite reel in for a lead-off double. Kim also doubles to right scoring Stanton. Brayden Risedorph is warming in the bullpen. Bothwell strikes out the nine-hole hitter for the first out and Risedorph is brought in to face the top of the Wolverine order. Jefferis hits a hard single and now runners are at the corners with one out. Tibbitts reels in a pop up in foul ground to secire the second out. Ted Burton hits a ball into the right field gap plating two more. Michigan up big now. Risedorph ends the inning with a strikeout.

Top 4th: Indiana 0, Michigan 3

Michigan’s infield is providing a lot more help to Voit than the Hoosiers are to Bothwell. Three great defensive plays by infielders equal three quick outs.

Bottom 3rd: Indiana 0, Michigan 3

Ty Bothwell gets a quick out on a comebacker, but walks Jeffries on a full count. Bothwell had Jeffries picked off in a pickel, but the throw from Tibbitts to Cerny had Cerny out of position and Jeffries is awarded the stolen base. He scores on a single. An infield dribbler is picked up by Pyne, but a throwing error allows another run to score when the throw home also ended with Serruto out of position to make the tag. A single drives in another run before Bothwell ends the inning with a strikeout.

Top 3rd: Indiana 0, Michigan 0

Cerny hits a ball hard on a line for a fly out to left. Peter Serruto hits a ball up the middle for a one-out single. With two outs, Whalen crushes a 3-2 pitch foul just missing a homer before ground out to end the inning.

Bottom 2nd: Indiana 0, Michigan 0

Voit is also an everyday hitter and is in the batting lineup as well. He flies out to Devin Taylor in right to start the inning. Jack Van Remortel hits a ball off of the left field fence for a double. Bothwell comes right back and gets a strikeout on a low breaking ball. Bothwell strikes out Jonathan Kim with high heat to end the inning with no damage.

Top 2nd: Indiana 0, Michigan 0

Freshman Michigan pitcher Mitch Voit is working 88-90-MPH with his fastball and getting a lot of swing and miss from the Hoosier lineup. Voit used it to strike out Carter Mathison and Josh Pyne. Hunter Jessee flew out to center to end the inning.

Bottom 1st: Indiana 0, Michigan 0

Cody Jefferis hits a two-strike change-up of of Indiana starter Ty Bothwell for a lead-off single. Bothwell strikes out Tito Flores. Ted Burton just misses a home run foul, before hitting a ground ball into left field for a single. Bothwell induces a ground ball off the bat of Joey Velazquez that Tyler Cerny and Glasser turn for a 4-6-3 double play to end the inning.

Top 1st: Indiana 0, Michigan 0

Phillip Glasser starts the game with a single to left on the first pitch of the game. Bobby Whalen struck out on an outside fastball. Devin Taylor popped a ball up in foul territory. Brock Tibbitts fouls off a couple of two strike pitches to work the count full. He flies out to right to end the inning.
