After two solid outings, Indiana Saturday starter Cole Gilley struggled with off-speed command and only lasted three innings in a situation where Indiana’s bullpen was stretched thin. Conversly, Stetson lefty starter Jonathan Gonzalez was very effective, holding Indiana to just two runs in seven innings of work.

An illness has disrupted the Hoosiers’ starting lineup. TJ Schuyler had to start his fourth straight game at catcher in place of Jake Stadler. Freshman Hogan Denny returned to the lineup in right field. Andrew Wiggins, also battling illness stayed in the lineup at lead-off as the designated hitter in place of the ill Joey Brenczewski. Cooper Malamzaian started at third for the ill Will Moore.

Denny turned out a great return to lineup performance, getting two hits, including a solo home run. Malamazian also got a hit and scored in the eighth inning when Devin Taylor belted his 5th homer of the season. Freshman Jake Hanley finally had his 10-game hit streak brought to an end with an 0-4 day.

Gonzalez induced a lot of ground balls against Indiana’s heavy left-handed lineup and lept his pitch count low enough so that it was late in the game when Indiana saw the Stetson bullpen they did so much damage to the prior night.

Gilley gave up three runs in his three innings, two earned, although the unearned run was due to an error that Gilley committed himself. Two lefties followed up Gilley: senior Ryan Kraft and transfer Anthony Gubitosi. They got through their respective innings, but both struggled with command early and managed to put the Hoosiers down big by the late innings. Wild pitches lead directly to two of Stetson runs. Transfer Will Eldridge was effectively wild, walking two and striking out two finishing the Hoosier pitching with a scoreless 8th inning.

Indiana has one more game in DeLand, Florida tomorrow against Mount St. Mary’s. First pitch is scheduled for 11am.
