SCHEDULE CHANGE: Michigan State Series won’t start until 1pm on Sunday

Hoosiers will host Michigan State on Sunday and conclude the series with a noon double header on Monday

As rain, thunderstorms, and flash flooding continue to pound the middle of the country, the coaching staffs for the respective baseball teams for Indiana and Michigan State have agreed to revised schedule for the weekend series at Bart Kaufman Field.

I will be on site for all three games and will provide live blog coverage at the links above. Due to extra rest both teams should have every pitcher that is healthy available to go. Despite the immediate flexibility, this will complicate Indiana pitching in three ways.

First, the hope to use a pitcher more than once in a series basically goes out the window. Pitching Coach Dustin Glant will likely get only one shot to use guys like Cole Gilley and Ryan Kraft in one long outing.

Second, Indiana still has a game with a very good Ball State team on Tuesday night at 6pm, right after the double header. Indiana will likely be forced to throw exclusively arms that don’t go in a weekend series, a departure from the last few midweek outings. This may give opportunities to younger arms that we haven’t seen much of including Ryan Rushing, Henry Brummel, and Brayton Thomas.

Third, Indiana will have to have its pitching back up on Friday for a road series at Illinois. At least Illinois also did not play on Friday. They are currently slated to start their series with Maryland Saturday morning, weather permitting. This above all else is why I assume that Indiana starts senior Ben Grable in the opener against Michigan State, so that he will be on track to pitch either the next Saturday or Sunday against the Illini on close to full rest. If I read the notice by Illinois correctly, the Illini and Terps will only play two games this weekend. This really shifts the edge in next week’s series if it is true.
