You knew Devin Taylor would break out at some point. He’s been on a tear as of late and boy did he, going 5-5 with two homers. He wasn’t the only one with a great day at the plate.
Indiana Hoosiers 18, Mount St. Mary’s Mountaineers 5
Box Score
TJ Schuyler started at catcher in place of Jake Stadler, who is on the trip but dealing with an illness. Schuyler made the best of the opportunity by driving in a pair of runs with a single in his first at-bat of the game. Then Joey Brenczewski and Devin Taylor went back-to-back to put the Hoosiers up 5-0 with ace Gavin Seebold on the bump.
Seebold broke with the mold of his first two starts, pitch a clean first then struggling afterwards. The Mount roard back with a pair of runs in each of the next two innings. After 70 pitches, fresh Henry Brummel replaced Seebold and gave up a run in the fourth that tied the game at five a piece. Brummel hit a pair of batters in the fifth, but kept them from scoring.
Korbyn Dickerson, sensing Taylor was chasing him for the team’s home run lead, got the Hoosiers the lead back with a solo shot in the 5th. Brummel allowed two singles to lead off the 6th. Sophomore Ryan Rushing got called in for fireman duty. He loaded the bases by hitting a batter with one out, but with two strikeouts completed a key shutdown inning.
Schuyler got another RBI single in the 7th before Taylor broke the game open with a bomb. Of course, Dickerson could let any ground up in the home run race and made it back-to-back jacks. The Hoosiers tacked on five more in the eighth including a very special moment. Ryan Gilbert, in his second time with the program after coming to campus in the fall of 2021 as a freshman and leaving due to illness, made his Division 1 debut at the plate and crushed a two-run homer.
Freshman Trey Telfer loaded the bases, bt kept the Mount from scoring to secure the run rule victory. Indiana, now 4-5 on the season, will face host Stetson at 6:35pm in the back end of today’s doubleheader.
