There was no real contest on Sunday in Champaign. Illinois dominated the game from the start. Illinois lefty starter Regan Hall pitched a 7-inning complete game. His only blemish of any kind was a pinch hit solo home run off the bat of Xavier transfer Tyler DeMartino in the final frame when the outcome of the game was no longer in any doubt. The top five in the Hoosier order

Hall was able to pound the strike zone without fear all day as Illini hitters hung 8 earned runs on Indiana starter Gavin Seebold before he could even get 5 outs. Seebold started wild and what he was throwing in the strike zone was hammered for hits. Grant Holderfield was serviceable as the first arm out of the bullpen, finishing the second and third innings allowing only one earned run. Aydan Decker-Petty got roughed up for three extra base hits. He started his first frame with two great fastballs, but hung an 0-2 slider and very little went right for him after that.

The coaching staff took this opportunity to give some run to talented freshman arms that have not seen much game action. Freshman Brayton Thomas inherited loaded bases from Decker-Petty and got out of the fifth inning with two pitches and double play. Freshman Henry Brummel looked good in his outing allow no earned runs in the sixth. He allowed two hits after Will Moore’s third error of the game at third base extended the inning needlessly. Brummel recorded two of his three outs via the strikeout.

The loss drops Indiana to 10-8 in B1G play. The Hoosiers have managed to stay two games above .500 despite winning only 2 of 6 conference series so far. The two series won have been by sweep and they have avoided the sweep in the remaining series. Next up is a home midweek tune-up against Indiana State before welcoming a talented, but reeling Maryland team to Bart Kaufman Field for a three-game set starting Friday.
