Indiana Hoosiers 12, Ohio State Buckeyes 2 | Box Score

Indiana and Ohio State went with opposite strategies for the double header. Indiana elected a bullpen game to open the series, while Ohio State went with their ace, righty Chase Herell. Despite this fact, the Hoosier offense exploded on a windy day at Bart Kaufman Field. In total the Hoosiers scored 9 runs on 10 hits (4 home runs) to pull away from the Buckeyes.

Herrell held the Hoosiers at bay in the first inning, but Indiana scored in six of the remaining seven innings. Three Hoosiers had multi-hit days: Andrew Wiggins, Korbyn Dickerson, and Jake Stadler. Freshman Jake Hanley had two of Indiana’s homers. Wiggins and Dickerson had the other two. Dickerson’s ended the game with a run-rule “Walk-off” in the bottom of the 8th inning.

Hoosier pitching had traffic to deal with most of the game but with some help from a stellar defense, they got out of all the jams and the only damage was a two-run homer in the top of the second inning off of opener Pete Haas. Lefty Anthony Gubitosi earned the win in one inning of relief. Drew Buhr handled three innings of work, and Gavin Seebold closed the door with a quick final two innings of scoreless ball.

Defensively, catcher Jake Stadler threw out a would be base stealer, left fielder Hogan Denny threw out a runner trying to extend a double to a triple, and Tyler Cerny turned a ridiculous acrobatic double play in what proved to be the final outs of the game for the Buckeyes. Jasen Oliver saw a tone of action at second base. The two up the middle were excellent as the Hoosiers put together the second straight errorless performance.

Indiana improves to .500 on both the season and in the B1G at 9-9 and 2-2 respectively. Game 2 of the day and the series against Ohio State has a 5:35pm first pitch. Indiana ace righty Ben Grable will be on the bump for Indiana. Ohio State did manage to finish the game with only two arms throwing, so the Buckeyes likely have a more rested bullpen. Indiana would really like a deep out from Grable if this game is close.
