Devin Taylor

Devin Taylor is trending toward consensus All-American

With two more outlets to go, the Junior left fielder and day-1 draft prospect is cleaning up on accolades

Devin Taylor has been recognized by Perfect Game, the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA), and the National College Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) as an All-American. Perfect Game named Taylor as a first teamer. The other two placed him on second teams in a year with a lot of talented veteran outfielders that are MLB Draft prospects.

There are still two more outlets to go with D1Baseball and Baseball America likely awaiting the conclusion of the Men’s College World Series in nine days before publishing their final selections. If Taylor can make both of their All-American teams, he would be considered a consensus pick. Those will be the more difficult honors to get as they are weighing post-season performance into their selections, and Taylor’s post-season run ended in the B1G Tournament in Omaha last month, along with the very loaded outfield draft class Taylor is competing with.

MLB Draft predictions have him in a range from the low 20’s to the high 30’s in draft order, which would put him the late first or early second round. As hit tools go, Taylor has to be a dream for an MLB program. The smart, consistent hitter doesn’t go through huge swings of hot performance followed by slumps. For example he went through a power lull in the middle of B1G play but was still hitting the ball on the ground and improved his batting average. The power indeed came back, and like all three seasons at IU, Taylor was seeing the ball the best at the end of the season.

2025 MLB Draft Combine Attendees for Indiana (players and commits)

Defensively Taylor has made steady strides in his outfield play. He did not commit an error in his last 33 games, and has made some smart outfield assists. His arm is decent and he’s tracking balls off the bat well, despite not having what would be considered elite range. He is by no means a liability in the outfield and his hit tools and baseball acumen are just too good in my opinion to let him get passed over to the second round. I expect Taylor to be first Indiana player to go in the first round since Kyle Schwarber (4th overall to the Cubs) in 2014.
