Ty Bothwell strikes out 13 Gophers passing 200 Ks on his career

Ty Bothwell was on 7-days rest from getting hit hard by Penn State when his fastball velocity was 3-4 mph off of his typical outing. In Minneapolis today, he looked like the Bothwell we are most used to seeing this season. This was especially bad news for Minnesota, who have found themselves on the wrong end of Bothwell outings dating back to 2021.
Indiana Hoosiers 7, Minnesota Golden Gophers 1:
Box Score
The sixth year graduate student pitched seven complete innings, allowing only 1 run on 2 hits, walking 4 and striking out 13. He was locating his fastball effectively away to right handed hitters, occasionally coming inside with his cross-fire action. The effective fastball to both sides of the plate kept the Gophers uncomfortable during Bothwell’s outing.
Indiana hitters need one time through the order to get going against Minnesota righty Will Semb. Once they did though the Hoosier hitters managed 7 runs on 9 hits against the starter giving Bothwell all of the run support he needed. Hoosiers were paced by junior Josh Pyne who was 3 for 5 on the day. Freshman Cal Sefcik, who was a late replacement at DH for Andrew Wiggins, had his first multi-hit day of his college career. Redshirt freshman Joey Brenczewski also had a two-hit day and junior Carter Mathison ended Semb’s day with a two-run homer that put the Hoosiers up by seven.
Redshirt Freshman Jacob Vogel struck out 3, working around a hit and walk in two scoreless innings to seal the victory.
To make up the postponed contest from Friday, Indiana and Minnesota will play a doubleheader at 12 noon ET Sunday. Indiana will be without the services of staff ace Connor Foley who is out with an injury per B1G+ broadcasters. Both Indiana and Minnesota managed to only use one bullpen arm on Saturday, meaning that both teams will have fresh bullpens for the twin bill.
