Head Coach Jeff Mercer, in a program release today, made official what was rumored back on December 7th, when Flatground Pitching’s Josh Rudd broke on X that Greensboro Grasshoppers (High-A affiliate: Pittsburgh Pirates) pitching coach Matt Myers would return to Division I College Baseball as the pitching coach for Indiana. Myers replaces Dustin Glant who left the program on December 7th to become the assistant pitching/bullpen coach for the Washington Nationals at the Major League level.

Myers resume is ideal for a Hoosier pitching squad that has had mixed results in four seasons under Glant. Like Glant, Mercer hired Myers from a minor league pitching coach job. The difference is Glant had only three years of Division I college coaching experience (pitching coach at Ball State) before his time in professional ball, while Myers has nearly two decades of D1 coaching experience, eight of those as a head coach. Myers also has playing and coaching experience in the games top conference: the SEC.

Glant excelled at taking transfer pitchers who were not on draft boards and guiding them into the professional ranks, including Craig Yoho and Jack Perkins who have already pitched in the Major Leagues. While Hoosiers continued to see pitchers drafted, their collective performance on the mound in the Glant years has struggled, particularly early in the season. Glant’s best year by far was 2023 when sophomore transfer Luke Sinnard broke the Indiana single season strikeout record on the way to a regional finals performance.

By ERA metrics and walks, the 2025 season was a significant improvement over the 2024 staff, but in none of his four years could Glant get the team get under the target of 200 walks or an ERA under 5. A retooling of the coaching staff over the summer saw Blake Allen depart the program quietly after only one season as assistant/infield coach, and Denton Sagerman get promoted to a coaching role, helping Glant with pitchers and coaching the Hoosiers’ deep roster of catchers.

Xavier Carrera
Xavier Carrera vs. Xavier

This past fall’s exhibition games saw something new for a Glant coached pitching staff: the freshman pitchers shined. Xavier Carrera in particular was electric in a pair of multi-inning outings. In the Hoosiers 20-2 route of Xavier, freshmen shouldered a majority of the innings including six facing the minimum. Now Myers will step in with less than two months before February 13th’s opening day at North Carolina. The assumption would be that Sagerman gave the pitchers their winter break work-out/throwing instructions, and Myers will dive in with the staff when they all return to campus in January, but that is a short window to learn a staff and prepare for actual competition.

The hope here is that on top of professional development experience, which may be a bigger help in future recruiting, it is the extensive college coaching experience that may allow for Myers to make a quick, positive impact. Pitching is as much psychological as it is physical, and giving inexperienced pitchers what they need to succeed at the D1 level early may be a difference maker. Under Mercer, the pitching coach has also been the team’s primary scout of opposing hitters and the team’s primary pitch caller.

Myers was a member of the Pirates top-rated minor league coaching staff at Greensboro in 2025. The pitching staff recorded two combined perfect games in less than a week and half and the team won 88 games on the season, so Myers has had recent success with guiding a pitching staff to get outs and win baseball games.

It’s also a reversal of roles, as Mercer served as an assistant coach on Myers’ staff when Myers was head coach at Western Kentucky over 10 years ago.
